Thankfully Africa has defied some of the initial scary projections on the growth path of the pandemic. COVID__19 Africa Pandemic Coronavirus
and friends of Africa. While the sheer speed and scale of infection with numbers growing by the weeks with its attendant death toll is scary, the projections of what these numbers could be in the next three-four weeks are even more compelling and better imagined than experienced.
Reviewing this against the literal doubling of Nigeria’s cases from 1095 cases as of the 24th of April 2020 to 2,017 cases as of 1st May 2020. This increased within a one-week period and the on-going expansion of testing would suggest that we take another look at these projections rather than the emerging euphoria and complacency that Africa has an alternate pathway for COVID-19 transmission.
In the context of the emerging euphoria that the case growth in many of African countries is not as bad as predicted, I will strongly suggest an alternative view based on a cautious and proactive reflection on these numbers. While many of us have struggled with staying anywhere for the long haul, this is one case in our lifetime where we must ensure that complacence does not take hold on both the sides of leadership and followership.
