Upside Foods, a California-based company that produces meat from cultured chicken cells, will be able to begin selling its products after the US Department of Agriculture inspected its facilities, CNN reports. The United States, for the first time, has given approval for consumption of laboratory-grown meat according to the US Food and Drug Administration.

The statement reads: “Advancements in cell culture technology are enabling food developers to use animal cells obtained from livestock, poultry, and seafood in the production of food, with these products expected to be ready for the U.S. market in the near future.” Recall that Dr. Robert earlier said that the process of making cultivated meat was “similar to brewing beer, but instead of growing yeast or microbes, we grow animal cells.”

Advocates hope that cultured meat will reduce the need to slaughter animals for food while also aiding in the fight against climate change. The food system accounts for roughly a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, the majority of which come from animal agriculture.
