The police in Adamawa State have arrested a truck driver for causing gridlock on the Yola-Girei link bridge.
Eyewitnesses said the angry driver of the truck laden with goods alleged that the men of the Nigerian Customs Service in the state demanded N15,000 bribe, and subsequently used his truck to block the link bridge, paralysing vehicular movements for several hours. It was also gathered that the truck driver was later joined by other members of tanker drivers union, who used the opportunity to protest against alleged exploitation by security agents operating on the major highway linking Song, Hong, Gombi and Mubi in the state, which shared boundary with the Republic of Cameroun.
An eyewitness said some Custom officials had allegedly demanded N15,000, but the driver was able to raise N9,000. He said, “The officials thereafter seized the truck driver’s mobile phone. The angry driver used his truck to block the road, causing gridlock before the intervention of the police.”
