President Bola Tinubu has implemented a significant restructuring of leadership within several federal universities in Nigeria, aiming to revitalize the higher education system. This includes appointments, reassignments, and dissolution of governing councils, impacting universities such as Yakubu Gowon University, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, University of Uyo, Federal University of Lokoja, and Federal University of Oye-Ekiti.

President Bola Tinubu announced a significant reshuffling of leadership within several federal universities across Nigeria on Thursday, February 6. The changes, announced by presidential aide on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, are effective immediately.

Onanuga detailed a series of appointments and reassignments, impacting various universities including the Yakubu Gowon University (formerly University of Abuja), the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), the University of Uyo, the Federal University of Lokoja, and the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti.At the Yakubu Gowon University, Professor Aisha Maikudi was relieved of her duties as Vice-Chancellor, and the governing council was dissolved. Senator Lanre Tejuoso, the current Pro-Chancellor at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, was appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor at Yakubu Gowon University. Tejuoso's position in Makurdi will be filled by Joy Emordi, the current Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education. Lar Patricia Manko has taken on the role of Acting Vice-Chancellor at Yakubu Gowon University for a six-month term. Importantly, Manko will not be eligible to apply for the permanent Vice-Chancellor position when it becomes available.Further changes at UNN saw Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu removed from his position as Acting Vice-Chancellor, prior to his term ending on February 14. Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam will serve as his successor for six months, also ineligible for the permanent position. General Ike Nwachukwu has been reassigned from Pro-Chancellor at UNN to Pro-Chancellor at the University of Uyo. Engineer Olubunmi Ojo is the new Pro-Chancellor at UNN, previously holding the same position at the Federal University of Lokoja and the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti. Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi, the current Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, will succeed Ojo at the Federal University of Lokoja. Senator Sani Stores is the new Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, replacing Senator Joy Emordi. Senator Stores is a Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, a current Council Member at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has been appointed the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State. Onanuga stated these changes reflect President Tinubu's administration's commitment to revitalizing Nigeria's higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability. The restructuring is expected to strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria's tertiary education sector
