The Nigerian government plans to establish a new federal polytechnic in Abuja, to be named after President Bola Tinubu. The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, confirmed the development, stating that the project aligns with the government's focus on technological and vocational training.

The federal government of Nigeria has given the green light for the establishment of a new federal polytechnic in Abuja , to be named after President Bola Tinubu. This announcement comes from Tunji Alausa, the newly appointed Minister of Education , who confirmed the development in a letter addressed to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on January 9th.

Alausa stated that the creation of this institution is a key part of the Ministry of Education's strategy to ensure that each state in the country has access to a federal polytechnic. He emphasized that the project aligns perfectly with the government's overarching policy of prioritizing technological and vocational training. The letter to Minister Wike requests the identification of suitable locations in Gwarinpa, Abuja, for both the temporary and permanent campuses of the new polytechnic. Alausa further revealed that a technical team comprising representatives from the Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) is scheduled to conduct an on-site inspection of the proposed locations. The government has also expressed its openness to assuming control of existing tertiary institutions within the FCT if they meet the necessary criteria to be transformed into the federal polytechnic. Idris Bugaje, the Executive Secretary of the NBTE, underscored the urgent need to address several pressing challenges currently faced by polytechnics in Nigeria. He outlined plans to bolster institutional capacity, foster stronger industry collaborations, and facilitate international partnerships. Bugaje affirmed the NBTE's vision to position the polytechnic system as the driving force behind Nigeria's economic development and industrial growth
