Medical students at the University of Ibadan (UI) staged a protest at the University College Hospital (UCH) over a prolonged power outage exceeding 100 days. The outage disrupted academic and clinical activities, prompting students to demand immediate solutions from the government and the hospital administration.

Medical students at the University of Ibadan (UI) took to the streets in protest on February 10, 2025, over a debilitating power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH) that had persisted for over 100 days. The students, who receive their clinical training at UCH, expressed that the lack of electricity had severely hampered both academic and clinical operations, significantly impacting their overall well-being.

Their protest, which began within the confines of the hospital, escalated to the streets of Ibadan, where they carried placards demanding an end to the darkness. The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) had disconnected UCH from the national power grid in November 2024, citing unpaid debts. During the height of the protest, Bayo Adelabu, the minister of power, and the IBEDC management convened a meeting at UCH to address the ongoing power crisis. The students, however, remained resolute, urging the minister to provide concrete solutions that would restore power and alleviate the disruptions to their academic and clinical pursuits. In response, Adelabu assured the protesting students that both the government and UCH administration were actively working to resolve the situation. He promised a permanent solution to the power outage and stated that IBEDC would soon reconnect UCH to the power grid. He also hinted at a potential 50 percent electricity subsidy for UCH to help mitigate the financial burden of the power bill
