Mrs Adiaha Sam-Akpe, a divorcee whose daughter, Uduak Obong, 30, seven-year-old granddaughter, and one Blessings, 18, allegedly died from food poisoning on August 3 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, tells PATRICK ODEY, through an interpreter, how the tragedy has affected herMy name is Adiaha Sam Akpe. I am a trader. I buy fish and sell it to people in the market.
I live in the Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. On Monday my daughter, Uduak Obong called me on the phone from Uyo where she was living with her daughter, and we exchanged greetings. I asked her how they were doing and she said everyone was fine in the house. But on Tuesday, someone else called me to tell me that my daughter who called me on Monday was dead and that she and her daughter died. I rushed to Uyo to discover that what the person said was true.
Before I arrived, their corpses had been taken to a private hospital. It was in the hospital that they were certified dead. When they went to the first hospital, the nurse on duty there, after examining them, said they were still breathing and the nurse advised that we should take them to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, along Abak Road, Akwa Ibom State. When they went there, they discovered that the doctors there were on strike because the gate was closed.
