The Department of State Services (DSS) has denied Nnamdi Kanu's legal team, family, and a former lawmaker access to the IPOB leader, sparking outrage over alleged violations of the Nigerian Constitution and court orders.
The Department of State Services ( DSS ) on Wednesday barred Nnamdi Kanu 's legal team, family members, and a former Abia State House of Assembly member, Obinna Ichita, from visiting the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra ( IPOB ). Kanu's lead Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, took to X (formerly Twitter) to condemn the DSS 's actions, calling it a blatant violation of the Nigeria n Constitution and a court order.
He wrote, 'ALERT/UPDATE: Today, the DSS arbitrarily refused us (the Legal Team), an ex-member of Abia State House of Assembly & the family of MAZI NNAMDI KANU from having a visitation with him. This flagrant violation of the Nigerian Constitution and a subsisting Court order will not stand.'Kanu has been detained by the DSS since his arrest and subsequent extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria in 2021. Despite being discharged and acquitted of all terrorism and treasonable felony charges by courts, the Nigerian government has refused to release him. Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja Federal High Court has also adjourned Kanu's trial indefinitely. The recurring denial of access to Kanu, coupled with the government's continued detention despite his acquittal, has raised serious concerns about the rule of law and due process in Nigeria. Kanu's supporters and human rights organizations have condemned the DSS's actions, demanding his immediate release and an end to his unlawful detention
