IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu has taken legal action against former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad, alleging defamation and seeking substantial damages.
The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra ( IPOB ), Nnamdi Kanu , has filed a lawsuit against Bashir Ahmad , a former media aide to President Muhammadu Buhari. Kanu is seeking N100 billion in damages from Ahmad over what he considers to be libelous and damaging statements made on social media . Through his lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu filed the suit on Tuesday and is demanding an apology within 42 days.
Ahmad had previously stated on X, formerly known as Twitter, that anyone advocating for Kanu's release should be considered an enemy of the country. He labeled Kanu a terrorist and the leader of a proscribed terrorist organization, IPOB. Kanu's originating summons, served on Ahmad, requires a response within 42 days, outlining his defense against the allegations. The lawsuit seeks several declarations and orders. Kanu wants the court to declare Ahmad's statements, which claim Kanu is a terrorist and published on X, Talkofnaija.com, and phoenix-browser.com, as libelous and defamatory. Furthermore, he demands Ahmad retract the publication through the same media platforms, particularly Ahmad's X handle. Kanu also requests an unreserved apology letter to be written and delivered to him, prominently published as a full-page advertisement in three national dailies: The SUN, Daily Trust, and Guardian. The lawsuit also seeks a perpetual injunction preventing Ahmad from making further defamatory statements about Kanu. Lastly, Kanu demands N100 billion in damages as compensation for the alleged harm caused by Ahmad's words
