A tragic stampede occurred at a cultural festival in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, Nigeria, resulting in multiple fatalities, particularly among young children. The incident happened in the Bashorun area of Ibadan on Wednesday. While the exact number of casualties remains unconfirmed, reports indicate that injured individuals were rushed to hospitals within Ibadan. According to reports, though the festival was scheduled for Wednesday, some parents brought their children on Tuesday, while others arrived early Wednesday morning. The overcrowding at the entrance to the event site caused the stampede, leading to the deaths of many children. Efforts to contact the spokesperson of the Oyo State Police Command, Adewale Osifeso, were unsuccessful. The Oyo State Government, however, confirmed the incident in a statement. Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, stated that the state government swiftly deployed rescue and emergency teams upon receiving news of the tragedy.
