Ndidi Dike is an accomplished British-Nigerian mixed-media artist based in Lagos. She recently hosted an exhibition titled ‘Working through an Impasse’ centred around the COVID-19 pandemic and the ripple effects on the life of the ordinary Nigerian. She speaks to GODFREY GEORGE about what inspires her as an artist and how she has been able to thrive as a woman in a male-dominated spaceYou know one unique thing about being African is something many consider a bit strange.
First, I’d like to say the issue of abuse in families is a very sad situation. I know there are a lot of non-governmental organisations and civil society organisations, which address these social issues within and outside the family set-up. Counselling, too, is good.
You’d agree we live in a gendered world. The artistic space is not left out of this struggle as we find more male artists than female. How have you been able to thrive in this male-dominated space? Growing up, did you have some kind of antagonistic tides from parents, relatives or friends for choosing the arts?
