LAWMA Intensifies Operations Ahead of Easter, Urges Residents on Waste Management
LAWMALagosWaste Management

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has heightened its operational activities across Lagos State in preparation for the Easter celebrations. The agency is urging residents to adopt proper waste disposal habits and is taking proactive steps to ensure environmental cleanliness and prevent flooding. This includes enhanced waste evacuation, deployment of personnel to strategic locations, and collaboration with private sector operators.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority ( LAWMA ) has significantly ramped up its operational efforts throughout Lagos State in anticipation of the upcoming Easter celebrations. This proactive measure aims to ensure a clean and healthy environment for all residents during the festive period and mitigate the risk of flooding, particularly with the approaching rainy season.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, made this announcement in a statement released from the Authority's headquarters, detailing the comprehensive plan put in place to manage the expected surge in waste generation. This plan encompasses a multifaceted approach to waste management, including enhanced waste evacuation strategies and robust monitoring systems to guarantee prompt and efficient service delivery across the metropolis. Recognizing the typically elevated levels of waste produced during festive seasons, LAWMA is taking proactive measures to address the potential challenges and ensure the city remains clean and environmentally sound. \LAWMA’s strategy involves several key components, the first of which is the augmentation of waste evacuation services throughout Lagos. This includes the deployment of additional personnel and equipment to strategically important locations, such as markets, motor parks, and other high-traffic commercial areas, to guarantee consistent waste collection throughout the Easter period. The agency is also collaborating closely with licensed Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators to maintain regular domestic waste evacuation schedules and swiftly address any potential service disruptions. The emphasis is on proactive waste management to prevent waste accumulation. Residents are strongly advised to take personal responsibility for their waste disposal practices. Gbadegesin highlighted the importance of residents' cooperation in maintaining a clean environment and encouraged them to adopt various waste reduction techniques, such as minimizing unnecessary purchases, reusing materials whenever feasible, and separating recyclable materials from general waste. Residents are also reminded that indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unauthorized areas, including drainage channels, road medians, and open spaces, is strictly prohibited. Such actions can obstruct the flow of stormwater, increasing the likelihood of flooding, a significant concern as the rainy season approaches. The agency is also providing various channels through which residents can report waste-related issues and receive prompt responses.\Furthermore, LAWMA emphasizes the shared responsibility of maintaining a clean and sustainable environment. The agency reiterated its commitment to working hand-in-hand with both service providers and the residents of Lagos to achieve this common goal. The Authority is actively working on improving service delivery through operational enhancements, infrastructure upgrades, and sustained public awareness campaigns. This includes leveraging social media platforms and the customer care line to create a more responsive and accessible system for waste management inquiries and complaints. The agency wants to continuously improve efficiency and responsiveness to resident's needs. LAWMA is committed to making the city cleaner by working with all the stakeholders. The goal is to make a positive impact to the residents of Lagos. Residents are encouraged to proactively participate in waste management efforts. The ongoing initiatives reflect LAWMA’s dedication to providing a cleaner and healthier environment for all Lagos residents, especially in view of the upcoming Easter celebrations and the approaching rainy season. The agency's commitment also extends to educating the public on effective waste management practices through continuous outreach programs and social media campaigns, reinforcing the importance of a collective approach to environmental stewardship. LAWMA's customer care line and social media platforms remain available for residents to report waste-related issues promptly and efficiently
