Residents of Katsina metropolis and parts of Batagarawa Local Government Area are enduring prolonged power outages for up to four days, with erratic supply in other areas. The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) attributes the disruption to a fault in a substation, impacting homes, businesses, and leading to increased prices for essential goods like ice blocks. Technical teams are working on repairs to restore electricity.
Residents within the Katsina metropolis and certain areas of Batagarawa Local Government Area are expressing their deep dissatisfaction over the prolonged and pervasive power outage s plaguing their communities.
Reports indicate that several neighborhoods in these two local government councils have endured a complete absence of electricity for a span of four days. In other affected vicinities, citizens are experiencing highly inconsistent and unreliable power supply.
The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), the service provider responsible for the region, has attributed the widespread outage to a significant technical fault identified at a substation within the state.
Rukayya Shehu, a married woman residing in the NYSC camp layout in Barhim, shared her frustration with PREMIUM TIMES, stating that the last time her area received electricity was on a Saturday, and as of Thursday, they had been without power for four consecutive days.
The lack of electricity has not only caused discomfort but has also created security concerns. Nafiu Aminu, another resident of the NYSC camp layout, described his predicament, explaining that the sweltering heat forces him to sleep outside his home. However, this alternative is fraught with danger due to the prevalent threat of thieves and opportunistic criminals known locally as Kauraye who are known to break into homes to steal valuables. He emphasized that while sleeping outdoors is hazardous, it has become their only recourse.
The economic implications of the power disruption are also being felt keenly by local businesses, particularly those selling cold beverages and ice blocks. These vendors have been compelled to increase their prices significantly due to the operational challenges posed by the outage. A vendor specializing in ice blocks located at the Barhim roundabout explained that the continuous power interruption has left them with no other viable option but to hike the prices of their products.
Furthermore, they are now incurring additional expenses for diesel to operate their generating sets, costs that would be entirely avoided if a stable power supply were available. An examination by PREMIUM TIMES revealed that the price of an ice block, which was previously sold for N100 naira just a week prior, has now risen to between N150 and N170 naira.
Salihu Nasir, a resident of Sabon Titin Kwado within the metropolis, recounted his daily struggle to secure cold drinks, stating that he often has to call a specific vendor in the morning to reserve ice water and any chilled soft drinks. He mentioned that without such prior arrangements, he might have to endure a lengthy queue at the shop.
In response to the escalating complaints, the management of the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has issued a statement expressing their regret over the inconvenience caused to their customers. They have assured the public that efforts are underway to resolve the issue promptly.
In an official communication released on their X handle on Wednesday, KEDCO clarified that the current power outage is a direct consequence of a fault identified on the 11kv incomer breaker associated with the 15MVA Transformer located at the IBB way Injection Substation. The company further specified that the disruption is affecting customers serviced by the 11kV Dandagoro, 11kV GRA, and 11kV Army Barracks feeders.
KEDCO affirmed that their technical team has been immediately deployed to commence the necessary repairs. Their statement indicated that the power transformer has been isolated, and the process of replacing the faulty component is actively in progress. The company is committed to restoring normalcy to the affected areas as swiftly as possible, acknowledging the significant impact of this outage on the daily lives and livelihoods of its consumers
