World Emoji Day, celebrated on July 17, is a day that the world celebrates these tiny icons that are an essential part of our online communication. But what exactly are emojis and where did they come from?Short for picture characters, emojis were created by Japanese mobile carrier, NTT DoCoMo, in 1999. They sought to create visual representations of text message expressions. The artist, Shigetaka Kurita, made 176 emojis for the mobile internet platform, i-mode.

Furthermore, the red heart emoji is the second most-used emoji in Africa, topping only three countries. They are Algeria, Tunisia, and Somalia. Additionally, the data shows that 10 other African countries show a strong preference for their respective national flags over any other emoji. These countries include Senegal, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Seychelles, Morocco, and Burundi among others.Globally, the most used emoji in the world is the face with tears of joy. For North America, the most used emojis are the laughter ones. And in Europe, the most used emojis are the red heart and national flags of various European countries.

Finally, it is obvious that emojis have now become an integral part of how we communicate in the digital age. They have gone from minimal strokes and characters to internationally recognised icons.
