THE Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji last week used the official commissioning of the hospital complex donated to the church by the Imo State Government to provide food items and clothes to the sick and infirm.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ugorji said: “This hospital is one of the three, built by the Hope Uzodimma administration last year and handed over to the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri. When the governor built these hospitals, it was to take proper care of the sick amongst us. Anything outside this will be contrary to the intent and purposes behind the construction of the medical outfit.

“We are here in Oguta, not only to celebrate the World Day of the Sick, but to also tell our sick brothers and sisters in the Archdiocese that we sincerely love, cherish and remember them in our prayers. We are here in Oguta, to urge the sick not to despair. “For the medical staff in this establishment and in all hospitals across Nigeria, they should keep constantly in view that their job is a life-saving humanitarian job.“I charge you all to serve God in these our brothers and sisters that are sick. You must work with unfettered zeal and love.

“To the government, anything bordering on people’s welfare should not be politicized. It should be treated as a first charge, but what we have been seeing does not give anybody a good cause for cheer. “Hunger is ravaging the land. The Federal Government should review its economic policy. It is not working at all. People are dying and goods are expensive. Our future looks more dark and bleak than our yesterday. A visit to, especially our rural communities, will reveal glaring realities of severe suffering in the land.”
