Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act late Monday, thereby granting the federal government more power to end anti-vaccine protests and blockades across the country.“I want to be very clear the scope of these measures will be time-limited, geographically targeted, as well as reasonable and proportionate to the threats they are meant to address.”
For more than two weeks, protesters have occupied downtown Ottawa around Parliament Hill. The original purpose of the demonstration was to oppose the mandatory vaccination of truck drivers crossing into Canada from the U.S., but it turned into a protest of all COVID-19 rules and restrictions. Some organizers also demanded that the democratically elected Liberal government be removed.
On Monday, Alberta RCMP arrested 11 people at the Coutts border after police found a small cache of firearms and a large quantity of ammunition.“We’re not suspending fundamental rights or overriding the Charter of Rights and Freedoms,” he said. “We are not limiting freedom of peaceful assembly. We are not preventing people from exercising their right to protest legally.”Earlier on Monday, Trudeau spoke with provincial and territorial premiers about using the Emergencies Act.
