For the first time since its creation, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is invoking the Emergencies Act, giving the government far reaching powers, to deal with protests that have blocked borders and crippled downtown Ottawa for weeks. EmergenciesAct
He said it was clear police needed new tools to deal with the challenge.
The Emergencies Act has not been used since it was written in 1988. The government will not have seven sitting days to bring it before Parliament where it will face a vote from MPs and then Senators who can vote to rescind it. The government consulted with provincial premiers Monday, as the act requires, but many premiers expressed opposition to using it in their provinces.
Before Trudeau spoke on Monday, several large trucks were moved, with a police escort, from other streets onto Wellington further entrenching the convoy south of Parliament Hill. Watson said on Twitter it could take several days to clear the truck from residential areas.
