When the history of recent Olympics is written, the Tokyo Olympics will probably be remembered not for the records set but for its anomalies. There were no cheering crowds patriotically waving national banners. The chairman of the organising committee was sacked just days before the opening ceremony. There was an earthquake and torrential rains.

By 2021, enthusiasm for the games had built up in the international sphere, but not necessarily the domestic. Public opinion showed that a majority of Japanese people oppose hosting the games for fear that they would be a COVID-19 super spreader. However, the medal count doesn’t do justice to the meritorious performance across the board. In table tennis, for example, it was a delight to watch Nigeria’s 7th time Olympian Funke Oshonaike take on America’s Liu Juan. Down by three sets, the 45-year-old who could pass for 25 stormed back and won the fourth. But she couldn’t sustain the momentum as she faltered in the fifth to lose the match.
