Nigerians have been assured that there are no plans to withdraw the old N1,000; N500 and N200 notes from circulation.According to the CBN, the claim that the apex bank was planning to withdraw these notes is unfounded.
The CBN further assured that both old and new noted of the N1,000; N500 and N200 denominations remain legal tenders. Hakama Ali, the acting director of corporate communications for CBN in a statement urged the public to disregard reports on the deadline for the usage of the old notes. She said, “The Bank’s previous clarifications and to offer further assurance, the CBN wishes to reiterate that the subsisting Supreme Court ruling granted on November 29, 2023, permits the concurrent circulation of all versions of the N1000, N500, and N200 denominations of the Naira indefinitely,” Ali said.
She further urged Nigerians to ignore such claims and continue using that old and new notes for their financial activities.
