There is anxiety in Team Nigeria’s camp at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after 10 athletes were disqualified for failing to meet anti-doping requirements by the Athletics Integrity Unit on Wednesday.
A source in the Nigerian camp in Tokyo, who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said majority of the Nigerian athletes, including those who were not disqualified, had been crying since they heard the news. “All of us cried, including those who were not disqualified. The news has affected the morale of all the athletes. The officials were trading blames instead of apologising,” he told The PUNCH.
“I have said it before and I will say it again. If you do not know the sport, not passionate about it/us , then you have no business there as an administrator. The sports system in Nigeria is so flawed and we athletes, are always at the receiving end of the damages,” Okagbare, a silver medallist at the Beijing Games in 2008, wrote.
“It has come to our attention that 10 athletes are not eligible to compete in athletics for Nigeria, including myself. The athletes are not at fault for this. Please we need your help on how we can waive this so all 10 of us can compete. @WorldAthletics @aiu_athletics.
