For fear of being suspected of having COVID-19, some people with presumptive tuberculosis or suspected cases of TB are no longer presenting at the hospitals for treatment.
Such people increase the number of undetected TB cases and community transmission in the country, says the National Tuberculosis, Burulli Ulcer and Leprosy Control Programme Department.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the health agency said, tuberculosis cases that were undetected constituted a pool for continuous transmission of the disease in the country. Lawanson said failure of TB patients and those with presumptive TB presenting at the hospital for treatment, might increase the possibility of Nigeria having increased cases.
