EDITORIAL: Stop media parade of crime suspects - Punch Newspapers

he public during which they are made to face journalists highlights the absurdity of investigation by the law enforcement agency in the country. After such an iniquitous indulgence, the accused persons most probably have been subjected to undeserved condemnation, vilification and presumed guilt by the public even before the matter appears before any court of competent jurisdiction for adjudication. This is not in tandem with the rule of law and the constitution of the country. It should stop.

There are perhaps few jurisdictions in the world where this charade, orchestrated with relish by the police in the name of fighting crime, takes place as is being witnessed regularly across the country. It has no place in a decent society governed by the rule of law. It is worrying that in purporting to carry out their work of fighting crime, the police engage in what an expert regards as “state-sponsored mob action, orchestrated by a primitive criminal administrative system.

It is remarkable that in most cases, such sensational revelations obtained at such media trials have been recanted by the accused as having been made under duress. This is reprehensible as our extant laws frown on torture during interrogation and investigation.
