Former spokesperson to Atiku Abubakar, Segun Sowunmi , has warned northerners to stop tribal rhetoric as it could damage the country's body politic. DAILY POST reports that the tax reforms proposed by President Bola Tinubu had generated controversies and anger with groups in the region demanding the suspension of the passage of the legislation. The bills—the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill 2024 (SB.583); the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill 2024 (SB.

584); the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill 2024 (SB.585); and the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024 (SB.586)—are currently before the National Assembly. President Tinubu said last Monday that the tax reforms had come to stay, ruling out the possibility of withdrawing them from the National Assembly as some governors demanded. Responding to Tinubu’s stance on the bills, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed stated that his colleagues would show Tinubu “their true colours.” However, Sowunmi, during a media interaction held on Monday in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, warned that such threats should stop immediately. He maintained that the tax reforms were not done to favour any zone of the country, insisting that the opinions of northerners were getting offensive to the sanity and safety of the country. He said: 'When we want to analyse and engage government, the first thing we need to do is to put ourselves in the government's shoes and try to see things from their perspective because it is easier to talk about the problem than to figure out solutions for it. 'And I have become convinced that because we were amalgamated in 1914 and we have been struggling to be a nation called Nigeria, if we don't manage our tribal rhetoric we would injure the country mortally.
