The incident has sparked fears of ethnic tensions, as police investigate the alleged attack on a herder's cattle by a group of community leaders and hunters.

In a disturbing incident that has sparked fears of ethnic tensions , six community leaders and hunters were arrested by operatives of the Ifo police division in Ogun State , Nigeria , for allegedly attacking and killing cattle belonging to a herder named Usman Abubakar. The suspects, identified as Taiwo Obasa, Gbolahan Abdullahi, Ojo Musiliu, Okwu Odey, Zomisin Lulu, and Abiodun Shoyoye, are accused of brutally attacking the herd, leading to the death of four cows.

These cows were subsequently butchered and distributed among the assailants. Two other cows sustained injuries, while four more went missing during the chaotic incident. The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that they received a report from Usman Abubakar, the owner of the herded cattle, on February 28, 2025. According to Abubakar, his herders were moving the cattle through Oba Karounwi Village near Ifo when they were confronted by a group of local leaders, known as Baales, from Oba’s Gidimo and Oba Oseni, accompanied by hunters. Despite pleas for peace, the group allegedly launched a violent attack on the cattle, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives and injuries to others. Upon receiving the alarming report, officers from the Ifo division swiftly responded to the scene and apprehended the suspects. During questioning, Obasa and Abdullahi confessed to witnessing the attack and receiving meat from a hunter named Terry, who has since been identified and is cooperating with the investigation. The implicated Baales had previously filed a complaint of assault by the herders at the Agbado division, leading the police to suspect a potential case of duplicity. The Ifo divisional police officer will be leading the investigation to ensure a thorough and impartial examination of all aspects of the incident. To prevent further escalation of tensions, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has ordered measures to ensure peaceful coexistence between the herders and the local community. He urged all parties involved and the general public to remain calm and refrain from any actions that could inflame the situation. The police command has pledged to conduct a comprehensive investigation to ensure that justice is served
