The Nigerian Senate yesterday urged aviation authorities to blacklist Very Important Persons (VIPs) that are violating the COVID-19 safety and security protocol at airports by prescribing a four-month ban for such offenders.

The apex legislative body also recommended that such violators should be exposed publicly to serve as a deterrent to others.

FAAN called out Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State; former governor of Zamfara, AbdulAziz Yari, and the publisher of a national daily, among others, for airport infractions. “It has been reported that these individuals have shown unwillingness to comply with set down rules and guidelines for the safety of all Nigerians. This must not be condoned under any circumstance,” he noted.

“I, therefore, urge that any Nigerian, who deliberately fail to comply with all measures as directed, should not be allowed entry into the Nigerian airports for at least four months, irrespective of his position. Furthermore, such individuals should be blacklisted at all airports and exposed on social media. This will serve as a deterrent to others,” he said.

Last year, Nigeria lent support to the global move to tackle unruly passengers by ratifying the ‘Protocol to Amend the Convention on Offences and Certain Other Acts Committed on Board Aircraft’, otherwise called the Montreal Protocol 2014. “These protocols are now part of the new normal all over the world, and no person, no matter how highly placed, is exempt from them, else he would be denied access to our facilities,” she said. She said the recent incident involving three VIPs was not personal, adding that they were merely implementing the Standard Operating Procedures .
