LAGOS State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, got a raw taste of what an average Lagos resident experiences in traffic bottlenecks on July 12 when his security aides apprehended three thieves in the act of robbing a motorist. The viral images of the incident at the Ojota Interchange illustrate the insecurity Lagos residents are exposed to on the road.
For many reasons, Lagosians are under siege from robbers, who operate daringly in traffic stops. Commuters waiting at bus stops are victims of these brigands. Pedestrians see their handbags and phones snatched by thieves on motorcycles. In a viral video last May, motorists fled and abandoned their vehicles in broad daylight in Mile 12 as robbers attacked them.
Viewed from the general perspective of security, it is incomprehensible that criminals will be openly wielding such heavy weapons freely. In the Ojota incident, the machetes were so long that they could not be easily hidden. The failure of the security agents to apprehend and put these robbers in their place reinforces the notion that Nigeria’s security system has nearly collapsed.
