The last few days have seen a one-coloured picture story drawn on the canvas provided by three major continents of the world. The tale is that of sudden storms and furious floods. From Africa to Europe, and then to Asia, the deadly rivulets of rage keep drawing blood with its aquatic talons.

Some days earlier, the European tale was even worse. Deadly floods swept through the continent in a fashion that has stunned both politicians and scientists. To be exact, since July 12, 2021, several European countries have been affected by catastrophic floods, causing deaths and widespread damage.

It is instructive to note that during the aftermath of the floods, scientists, activists and reporters all highlighted the connection to global trends in extreme weather, especially more frequent heavy rainfall caused by climate change. Indeed, researchers are just beginning to unravel the complex web of climatic, hydrological, and social factors that contributed to the catastrophe.

But before we get carried away with placing Lagos on the same chart with Henan and Germany, we must recognise that our problems are not the same. Whereas Lagos’ flooding problem is now a perennial affair, the European and Chinese flood emergency is what it is – an emergency, occasioned by extreme weather events. China says the Henan rainfall’s intensity has beaten a 1,000 years’ record.
