Over 3,000 primary school teachers from 13 local government areas of Ebonyi State, Nigeria, staged a protest in Abakaliki, the state capital, demanding unpaid salaries for three months. Teachers accused local government leaders of causing the death of three teachers on Christmas Day due to non-payment of salaries. Governor Francis Nwifuru had given the local government leaders a 24-hour ultimatum to pay the teachers' salaries so they could celebrate Christmas like other civil servants in the state. However, the state Commissioner for Education, Mr. Paul Awo Nwabosi, threatened to take action against the protesting teachers instead of listening to their grievances. The commissioner ordered the arrest of the protesting teachers, who were forced into a waiting Hilux van. Daily Post's attempts to get further comments from the commissioner were unsuccessful as he quickly entered the vehicle and drove away. The Ebonyi State ALGON Chairman, Mr. Chinedu Uburu, did not respond to phone calls seeking his comments on the issue at the time of this report.
