The Police Service Commission (PSC) has reversed a previous decision and ordered the immediate retirement of all senior police officers who have served for more than 35 years or reached the age of 60.
The Police Service Commission (PSC) has ordered the immediate retirement of all senior police officers who have served for more than 35 years or reached the age of 60. This decision, made at an extraordinary meeting on Friday, 31st January 2025, reverses a 2017 decision that allowed officers to use their enlistment date instead of their appointment date for retirement calculations.
The PSC stated that the 2017 decision contradicted the principle of service merger in the public service and violated Public Service Rule No 020908 (i & ii), which mandates retirement upon reaching 35 years of service or 60 years of age. This move effectively purges the police force of all officers who are age mates with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, who despite crossing 60 in September last year, will remain in service. This decision comes amidst renewed public scrutiny of IGP Egbetokun's tenure. Activist Omoyele Sowore's recent social media post, labeling Mr Egbetokun as an illegal IGP, reignited the debate surrounding the controversial amendment to the Police Act last year that extended his tenure to 2027. The amendment, which was passed with remarkable speed, drew criticism for its perceived lack of transparency and questionable motives. The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Nigerian Police Force have since clarified the legal basis for extending Mr Egbetokun's tenure in response to the public outcry. The PSC's mass retirement of senior officers underscores the ongoing debate about the governance and leadership of the Nigerian police force. The decision, while aimed at streamlining the service and ensuring adherence to public service rules, has also sparked discussions about the implications for institutional stability and the potential impact on morale within the force.
