General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, has expressed concerns over the careless handling of plastics

She stressed that there is a need for people to start considering how plastic pollution affects human health beyond its impact on the environment.

Speaking on the theme: ‘Plastic Pollution in Nigeria: Innovations and Solutions for a Sustainable Future’, Dr. Fasawe noted that plastic pollution can destroy the whole ecosystem and lead to death if not properly disposed of. She said, “If we do not dispose of it properly, plastic pollution that we are talking about is not just an eyesore, it has so many other indices that are alarming. It leads to death, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and the destruction of our whole ecosystem.

“Plastic waste generation per day in Nigeria is over 2.8 million tonnes, and out of this, only 10 to 13 per cent is recycled. Plastic is a non-biodegradable material, meaning that if we take 20 per cent, the rest of this is hanging around somewhere and when it hangs around somewhere, it becomes a problem. I wish people would start looking at the implication of plastic solutions outside the effect.
