Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate, condemns the Federal Government's decision to allocate no funds to the North-Central region in the 2025 budget, calling it discriminatory and detrimental to the region's progress.

Peter Obi , the Labour Party 's presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has expressed strong disapproval of the Federal Government 's decision to exclude a budgetary allocation for the North-Central region in the 2025 budget. Obi, in a statement released on his X account, characterized this omission as discriminatory and detrimental to the progress and well-being needed for Nigeria's advancement.

The former governor of Anambra State drew attention to the major challenges faced by the North-Central region, particularly terrorism, banditry, and ethnic conflict, which have resulted in loss of lives and displaced thousands of families. States like Plateau, Benue, Kogi, and Niger have been most affected, with thousands seeking refuge in internally displaced persons' camps. Obi stated, “The exclusion of the North-Central Development Commission in the 2025 budget is worrisome and requires immediate correction.” According to Obi, the Federal Government allocated a sum of ₦2.493 trillion to development agencies in five regions in the 2025 budget, but left out the North-Central. He argued that this action disregards the region's critical needs for the overall advancement of Nigeria. “This region, which serves as the bedrock of agriculture in Nigeria, deserves robust support to ensure security, peace, and development, which will benefit the entire nation,” he added. Obi urged the Federal Government and the National Assembly to urgently address this issue and rectify the omission, which could have detrimental consequences for the region and the country as a whole
