Following a rise in violent crimes, the Ogun State government is considering signing death warrants for condemned offenders, aiming to deter future criminal activity. Attorney General Oluwasina Ogungbade emphasized the state's commitment to upholding the law and ensuring justice is served.
Following a surge in criminal activity across Ogun State , the state government announced on Friday its intention to consider signing death warrants for condemned offenders who have been sentenced by competent courts. This move, according to the government, aims to deter individuals from engaging in heinous crimes within the state. The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice , Mr.
Oluwasina Ogungbade, SAN, revealed this stance after inspecting inmates and facilities at the Correctional Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta. Ogungbade expressed deep concern over the escalating rate of violent crimes in recent years, including cultism, ritual killings, and kidnapping. He emphasized the state government's commitment to taking decisive action by issuing death warrants and upholding the rule of law.'I can tell you that we are seriously considering sending a strong message that Ogun State is not a place where you can commit such serious crimes and get away with it,' Ogungbade stated. 'The law, as it stands today, stipulates that offenses like murder attract the death penalty, among others. However, if you look at it nationally, there has been a reluctance by state governments, particularly since the advent of democratic rule, to sign death warrants. But I assure you that we are now looking very seriously at following the law to the letter.'Ogungbade further explained that issuing death warrants falls under the governor's constitutional duty, and he is confident that the governor, upon taking office, fully understood the responsibilities associated with it. 'He is a governor who upholds the rule of law, so I assure you that in deserving cases, he will not shy away from this constitutional duty,' he asserted. While he declined to provide a specific timeline, he stated that in deserving cases, currently under review, death warrants will be issued. 'If someone has gone through the process of a fair trial and exhausted all appeals, we will seriously consider implementing those judgments, hoping it serves as a deterrent to others who might intend to carry out similar crimes. However, I assure you we will be systematic and not reckless about it,' Ogungbade added. He emphasized that the current administration has made significant strides in granting amnesty to individuals previously sentenced to death, converting such sentences to life imprisonment, reducing life sentences to fixed terms, and ensuring that punishment serves as a deterrent. He attributed the rise in criminal activity to a decline in moral principles and the encouragement of criminals by their family members. He noted that this contradicts African values, which condemn criminal behavior and demand punishment for offenders. Ogungbade concluded by stating that his visit to the Correctional Centre aimed to ensure the facility functioned effectively and that inmates were not subjected to inhumane conditions.
