As Ogun State gears up for the National Sports Festival (NSF), the state government is prioritizing a drug-free environment for athletes. Commissioner for Sports Development, Wasiu Isiaka, emphasized this commitment on Thursday during a meeting with a delegation from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA ), led by State Commander Tijani Rabe.
The Commissioner underscored the significance of the NSF, not just as a national sporting event, but also as a platform for unity and togetherness. He stressed the administration's dedication to collaborating with the NDLEA to ensure a fair and drug-free festival. Isiaka underscored the importance of maintaining a level playing field in sports, free from the influence of drugs and prohibited substances. He urged all relevant agencies to join the government's initiative.Furthermore, the Ministry of Sports Development, in partnership with the NDLEA, plans to organize a comprehensive training program for athletes. Isiaka stated, “We aspire to collaborate with the NDLEA to make this upcoming festival not only the best the country has witnessed but also a festival devoid of drugs. The Ministry seeks a strong alliance with this agency to prevent athletes from resorting to drugs to achieve victory at the expense of their clean competitors.”Earlier, State Commander Rabe acknowledged the historical distance between the NDLEA and the Ministry of Sports Development. He viewed the courtesy visit as the first step towards a fruitful partnership. Rabe asserted that collaboration with the Ministry would be transformative in deterring drug use and abuse among athletes, coaches, and officials. He pledged the NDLEA's readiness to train and retrain state athletes, ensuring a fair and competitive tournament. Rabe expressed confidence in the collaboration, stating, “Tournaments must be conducted in a fair atmosphere, where no participant gains an advantage through illicit substances. If this collaboration succeeds, it will yield nothing but positive results, culminating in the most exceptional sports festival ever organized.”
