The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has received approval from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to register inmates across the country for their National Identification Number (NIN). This move aims to ensure the inclusion of inmates in national development plans, enhance security, and facilitate smoother recapture during jailbreaks.

The National Identity Management Commission ( NIMC ) has granted a license to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to register inmates across over 252 custodial centers nationwide for their National Identification Number ( NIN ). This approval follows a request made by Sylvester Nwakuche, the acting controller-general of the NCoS, during a visit to Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the director-general of NIMC .

Nwakuche explained that this license will allow inmates to register for NIN, preventing their exclusion from national development plans, ensuring safety and security, and facilitating smoother recapture during jailbreaks. He emphasized that the visit aimed to strengthen collaboration between the correctional service and NIMC to enhance the service's operations. Nwakuche highlighted the academic achievements of inmates, who are pursuing and obtaining university degrees, including master's degrees and PhDs, in a variety of fields within correctional facilities. He stated that these individuals should not be excluded from the country's national development plans, advocating for their integration into society to contribute meaningfully to their families and the nation. Nwakuche further stated that inmates awaiting trial should also be included in national development initiatives and planning processes.Coker-Odusote, the NIMC DG, underscored the significance of NIN for Nigeria's development, emphasizing its integration with the banking sector. She pointed out that President Bola Tinubu's eight-point agenda relies on the country's digital identity, particularly NIN, to ensure authenticity and transparency in initiatives like student loans. Coker-Odusote cited the use of NIN in student loan programs to eliminate duplication and prevent fraudulent beneficiaries. She expressed full support for the NCoS in carrying out its mandate effectively, assuring them of the commission's commitment to providing the necessary license and assistance. She also expressed delight in the partnership with the NCoS, noting that NIMC had already established collaborations with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and other agencies
