The appeals from various stakeholders for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to extend the January 31 deadline for the old naira notes dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers
Sunday Punch reports that supporters of Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, have protested the ruling of the tribunal that nullified the victory of the governor in the governorship election. The newspaper says the Independent National Electoral Commission is planning to meet with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited over fuel scarcity.
The Nation says the CBN is under pressure to extend the January 31 deadline for old naira notes. The newspaper reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission has extended the collection of permanent voter cards till February 5. Daily Trust reports that the Arewa Consultative Forum said northerners will lose their hard-earned money if the deadline for the old naira notes is not extended. The newspaper says President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to eliminate chaos in the swap of old currencies to the redesigned ones.
The Guardian says Buhari has assured Nigerians that the redesigning of the naira is targeted at hoarders of illicit funds. The newspaper says experts have insisted on the need for the federal government to remove subsidies being paid for petrol.
