The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered 140 tonnes of expired drugs in a warehouse in Abia state. The agency also discovered two other warehouses filled with expired drugs that were being re-labelled and sold in the market. NAFDAC officials are calling for the establishment of a Wholesale Control Centre (WCC) in Aba to regulate the distribution of drugs and prevent the sale of expired products.
NAFDAC officials uncovered 140 tonnes of expired drugs in a warehouse in Umummeje, Umuocheala in Osisioma LGA, Abia state. The discovery was made during an operation conducted by the agency's Federal Taskforce in Aba .
The agency's Deputy Director in charge of Investigation and Enforcement, Omoyeni Babatunji, disclosed this on Saturday while briefing journalists about the agency's operations in Aba, stating that more than 178 drug samples drawn from the operation would be subjected to laboratory investigation. Mr. Babatunji also revealed that two other warehouses located on No. 269, Sam Mbakwe Road, formerly Faulk's Road, Aba, were found filled with expired drugs. He explained that the suspects had re-labelled some cartons of expired drugs and were attempting to send them back to the market before NAFDAC officials arrived. The agency's deputy director stressed the urgency for a drug warehouse Wholesale Control Centre (WCC) in Aba, citing the recurring cases of expired products being re-labelled and sold in the market. He stated that NAFDAC is currently at Maturity Level 3, or ML3, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), and a coordinated warehouse system, like the WCC, is crucial for effective drug regulation and control. Mr. Babatunji confirmed that NAFDAC has been engaging with state governors of Abia and Anambra to establish the WCC warehouse system. Another NAFDAC deputy director, Luis Madubuata, expressed horror and concern over the discovery of the expired drug stockpiles. He acknowledged the collaborative operation between NAFDAC and security agencies that led to the intelligence gathering and subsequent raid. Although no arrests were made at the time, Mr. Madubuata expressed hope that the police would apprehend the suspects and ensure they face justice. He commended Abia governor Alex Otti's government for its immense support to NAFDAC's operations in Aba, noting that the operations have progressed without any disturbances due to the government's backing
