A commercial bus in Lagos, Nigeria crashed after swerving to avoid pedestrians, injuring eight people.
Eight people sustained varying degrees of injuries after a commercial bus, known as 'Molue', crashed into the road median. A statement by Adebayo Taofiq, spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), said the bus was trying to avoid pedestrians at a busy bus stop when the crash occurred. The LASTMA spokesperson said the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into the median, overturn, and severely injure both the passengers and motorist on the spot.
The accident was triggered when the vehicle, registered as KTU 801 XM, lost control due to excessive speed, reportedly caused by driver impatience. In an attempt to avoid colliding with another LT commercial bus and pedestrians waiting at the roadside, the driver veered sharply, resulting in the bus crashing into the expressway median and overturning. Eight individuals, including five men and three women, sustained varying degrees of injuries. Among the injured was the bus driver, who suffered a fractured left arm. Tafoiq said LASTMA personnel and Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) officials responded, rescuing injured victims and rushing them to Ile-Epo General Hospital. On his part, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, general manager of LASTMA, sympathised with the injured and advised motorists to always prioritise safety. He stressed the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, particularly compliance with speed limits as prescribed by the state government. Bakare-Oki also advised commercial and private vehicle operators to prioritise regular maintenance of their vehicles to prevent accidents
