The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has advised Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the former resident electoral commissioner (REC) in Adamawa, to defend himself in court rather than through press conferences regarding the allegations against him.

The Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC ) has directed Hudu Yunusa-Ari , the former resident electoral commissioner (REC) in Adamawa , to defend himself in court rather than through public statements. Rotimi Oyekanmi, chief press secretary to INEC chairman Mahmood Yakubu, clarified in a statement to NAN on Monday that the commission would refrain from commenting on the ongoing legal proceedings against Yunusa-Ari.

The statement follows Yunusa-Ari's recent press conference where he addressed his suspension and the allegations against him. INEC had previously requested the removal of Yunusa-Ari, along with suspended RECs of Abia and Sokoto states, based on alleged misconduct during the 2023 general elections. The specific allegations against Yunusa-Ari stem from his declaration of Aisha Binani Dahiru, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, as the winner of the Adamawa state governorship supplementary poll before the complete collation of results. This action drew significant controversy and led to his suspension by former President Muhammadu Buhari in April 2023. INEC subsequently filed a six-count charge against Yunusa-Ari in a high court in Yola, Adamawa state capital, in July 2024. Oyekanmi emphasized that Yunusa-Ari now has the opportunity to present his case in court and defend himself against the accusations. He reiterated that the commission would not engage in public discourse on the matter due to its ongoing legal status
