Ogbonnaya Onu, a former Nigerian Minister of Science and Technology, has passed away after a six-month treatment abroad. President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his condolences and praised Onu as an intellectual giant. Onu played a key role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013.
TheCable understands that the late politician took ill after the 2022 All Progressives Congress presidential primary and was abroad for treatment for six months.
“My heart goes out to his family, the government and the people of Abia State and the country at large.Buhari was once a presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party when Onu was its national chairman. “In the lead-up to the historic 1999 presidential elections, Dr. Onu took the courageous step of stepping down as the presidential candidate of the All People’s Party in favour of Chief Olu Falae, the presidential candidate of the Alliance for Democracy . This selfless act exemplified his dedication to the greater good of the country and his willingness to prioritize national interests over personal ambition,” Fayemi said.
