Consumer journalist Alice Beer has warned that hot water bottles can be an explosion risk if they are too old and have been stored incorrectly
As the chill sets in, many of us are holding off on cranking up the heating to avoid soaring bills. In a bid to stay cosy without breaking the bank, millions will be reaching for their trusty hot water bottles.
Ignoring this date can lead to disastrous consequences, such as the bottle bursting and causing severe burns from the boiling water inside, reports The Express. Consumer expert Alice Beer highlighted the dangers by recounting an incident where a woman's teenage daughter suffered scalds after an old hot water bottle burst.Despite being covered and seemingly in good condition from storage, the rubber had deteriorated, resulting in the hot water leaking onto the girl's abdomen.
How to check your water bottle's expiration date On the funnel of your hot water bottle, you may notice a small flower symbol imprinted on the rubber. This floral emblem contains a number at its centre, indicating the year of manufacture. For instance, if your hot water bottle displays a single dot in the first petal, it indicates that the item was manufactured during the first week of January. Conversely, if there are 13 dots spread across four petals, it signifies production during the first week of April.
