A total of eight health professionals are among the new 54 COVID-19 cases announced for Bayelsa State on Wednesday.
The Deputy Chairman of the state COVID-19 Task Force, Dr Inodu Apoku, who said this in Yenagoa while confirming the 54 coronavirus patients in the state, lamented that the state was on the verge of recording an escalation in the number of coronavirus infections.
He said, “Yesterday, we received results from 76 samples. Fifty-four of these returned positive for COVID-19. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 86 in the state. We are expecting more test results from today as well. “Eleven of these positive cases are contacts of previously confirmed cases. Eight are health care professionals.”
Apoku, who is also the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, expressed fear that Bayelsa was now dealing with community transmission of the virus. “In the past two weeks, we have had over 300 pending samples of COVID-19 suspected cases in various COVID-19 laboratories across the South-South. The laboratories were having issues with reagents and supplies and as such, the delays in returning results.”All rights reserved.
