Former President Olusegun Obasanjo criticizes the state of democracy in Africa, arguing that it has deviated from its original purpose and failed to serve the needs of the people.

Nigeria's former president, Olusegun Obasanjo , has expressed deep concern over the perceived failings of democratic systems across the Africa n continent. Speaking at the 60th birthday celebration of former governor of Imo State, Emeka Ihedioha, in Abuja on Monday, March 24, Obasanjo argued that democracy's original essence – government for the people, by the people – has been distorted in Africa .

He lamented the shift from a system where leaders were entrusted with the responsibility of serving all citizens to the current practice of 'representative democracy,' which, according to him, has failed to encompass the needs and aspirations of the wider populace. Obasanjo emphasized that true democracy should serve everyone, not just a select few. He expressed his disappointment that the African model of democracy seems to prioritize the interests of a small group of individuals over the collective welfare of the nation. Furthermore, Obasanjo stated that the prevailing form of democracy in Africa appears disconnected from the continent's cultural fabric and traditional values. He argued that the current system lacks the essential elements of Ubuntu – the interconnectedness and shared responsibility that deeply permeate African societies. He contrasted the spirit of Ubuntu with the prevailing attitude of self-interest and the pursuit of personal gain that has characterized many African leaders. Obasanjo concluded by stating his firm conviction that democracy in Africa has failed to meet its true potential due to its lack of cultural relevance and its failure to address the fundamental needs of the people
