As early as 4am, Kano water vendors hit the city to source for borehole and tap water.
They thereafter wheeled the trucks in a convoy-like fashion to sell to their customers in the Sabon Gari area of the commercial city. Activities of water vendors have been ongoing in Kano for a long time.
Speaking with our correspondent, one of the water vendors, Shefiru Yunusa, said he sells between N30 and N40 per keg to his customers based in the Sabon Gari area of the state. According to him, he makes between N1, 500 and N2, 000 per day but have to pay owner of the truck a fixed amount of N500 for a truck with capacity to carry 20 jerry cans, while those with 16 jerry cans capacity pay N400 for hiring the truck per day.He said, “At the close of the day, I make about N1, 000 or less depending on the gains on certain days. Fortune smiles on us sometimes but not every day.
The business however appears to have been hit by COVID-19 pandemic which has affected critical sectors globally and killed millions worldwide. As the pandemic bites harder with social distancing and hand washing as parts of guidelines on how to avoid contracting it, water vendors in the ancient city are also feeling its impact.
From the meagre income, Galadima said he had to pay for the truck he often hired for his work every day. After paying for the hired truck and other things, he lamented that the remnant was barely enough to feed his three wives and 12 children. Also, Isa Ibrahim, who buys water from the Radio Kano area of the metropolis and supplies at Ajasa has also been battling difficult times since the outbreak of COVID-19.
Some of the water vendors are foreigners from neighbouring West African countries such as Nigeriens and Chad citizens and those from neighbouring Katsina and Jigawa states. The price range at Jabba differs from that of the rail line as they sell theirs at N5 per 20 litres jerry can compared to that of the rail line which sells between N500 and N400 per a hand-wheel truck of 20 and 16 litres respectively.
The volume of water pumped to the city on a daily basis is a far cry from what the state requires to satisfy the water needs of the dwellers.
