An Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday convicted four men for sneaking into Ekiti State from Lagos in defiance of the inter-state lockdown.
The four men, Afolabi Shuaib, who drove the truck; Daramola Sulaimon, Ibe Gregory and Adeniyi Idowu, who hid in the truck to beat security forces, were arrested at Igbara Odo, a border town in the state.Lawal also convicted and slammed a fine of N10,000 each on the three passengers for violating government order on restriction of movement across borders.
The chief magistrate, in his ruling, said the verdict was “against the background that Lagos is the epicentre of coronavirus in Nigeria and Alaba Market is a hotspot of possible spread of the virus”. The prosecutor, Mr Clement Ayoola, who is the director of Evaluation and Monitoring Department in the Ministry of Justice, told the court the defendants were nabbed at Igbara Odo while attempting to enter Ekiti in a truck.
“The offence is contrary to the provision of Regulation 2 punishable under Regulation 12 of the Ekiti State Coronavirus Regulations 1-4, 2020 made pursuant to Section 8 of the Quarantine Act, Cap Q2, LFN, 2004,” he stated.All rights reserved.
