THE Caretaker Chairman of the Nigeria Chess Federation, Sani Muhammed, has assured players that his committee is determined to end the crisis in the federation.
Sani was named chairman of the caretaker committee by the sports ministry, following the expiration of the tenure of the Lekan Adeyemi-led board in May. In 2019, over 600 Nigerian chess players petitioned world body FIDE, appealing for an urgent intervention in the face-off between the former president and several groups of chess players, administrators, and organisers in the country over alleged high-handedness, abuse of office, extortion, pursuit of personal vendetta and refusal of the ex-president to rate tournaments., Sani said his committee was working on putting an end to the entire crisis.
He said, “Firstly, I consider chess players my children because I was there before as president of the federation for eight years, before handing over to the past president . “Players need competitions and ratings; these are the things we will be working on. Rating is very important for chess players but somehow there was a mix-up in the past.
