The British Government hopes to offer a COVID-19 vaccine to all adults by the end of July, bringing it a step closer to restoring freedoms across the UK.
It comes amid fears the UK could delay its reopening as the highly contagious Delta variant of the virus continues to cause an uptick in cases. The UK could delay its easing of restrictions as people aged under 30 are invited to get the vaccine. The Delta variant, which is fast becoming the dominant coronavirus variant in the UK, is 40 per cent more transmissible compared to the country's existing strains. The date of June 21 to ease restrictions has been thrown in doubt as 5341 people tested positive yesterday, including 33,496 in the past week. Cases have risen by 70 per cent in just one week.
British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the government was open to potentially delaying the relaxing of restrictions amid the surge in case numbers. He also would not rule out continuing measures such as face masks in public settings and working from home where possible.
