The elder statesman had recently led a delegation of prominent Igbo leaders to Aso Rock where he made a case for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu. Reacting to his death, President Buhari in his condolence message through his spokesman, Garba Shehu, recalled his encounters with Amaechi in Abuja and Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
“He begged President Buhari to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to him but Buhari did not oblige him. It is cruel of the present administration. This is the last surviving minister of the First Republic, but his wish could not be granted. On their part, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders , the apex socio-political youth group in the South East described the death of Ameachi as grave loss to Ndigbo more so as the president frustrated his efforts to bring peace to South East.
"The Great Nationalist died because after all the suffering and going to jail in order to get the independent of Nigeria from the British, President Buhari and the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federal cannot respect him by honouring a promise made to him at his age."
