President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the national assembly to consider and pass a bill seeking to protect data in the country.

Buhari’s request was contained in letters read on the floor of the house of representatives and senate on Tuesday.“Pursuant to section 58, sub section 2 of the 1999 constitution as amended, I forward herewith the Nigerian Data Protection Bill for consideration and approval of by the senate,” the commander-in-chief said in the letter.The legislation is seeking to establish a commission that will protect citizens’ private information.

Buhari also asked the national assembly to pass a bill seeking to establish the Nigeria Police Force College Training School and Institution. “Pursuant to section 58, sub section 2 of the 1999 constitution, I forward herewith the Nigerian Police Force College Training School and Institution Establishment bill 2023 for consideration and passage of the senate,” he said in another letter.The school seeks to provide a comprehensive and legal institutional framework to provide specialised training for police officers, the president said.

Also, the president asked the upper legislative chamber to confirm the reappointment of Abdul Abubakar as non-executive director of the Central Bank of Nigeria for a second and final term and approve promissory notes to Plateau and Borno states. The federal government is seeking to reimburse the sum of N6.6 billion and N3.8 billion to the states respectively for road projects.
