Airtel Nigeria justifies its request for a significant tariff increase to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) by citing a 300% surge in operational costs over the past two years.

Airtel Nigeria has attributed its request for a tariff hike on call, data, and other telecommunications services to a 300 percent surge in operational costs . Chief Executive Officer Dinesh Balsingh explained in a recent statement that the rise in operating expenses over the past 18 to 24 months necessitates tariff adjustments for the long-term sustainability of the telecom sector.

Balsingh highlighted the challenging economic conditions faced by the industry, noting that tariffs have remained unchanged for over a decade despite substantial increases in operating costs. Nigerian telcos have submitted a proposal for a 100 percent tariff increase to the Nigerian Communications Commission, the country's telecom regulator. According to Balsingh, the proposed tariff adjustments aim to ensure the sector's sustainability while delivering benefits for Nigerian consumers. 'For over a decade, tariffs have remained static despite the dramatic increase in operating expenses, which have surged by over 300 percent in the last 18 to 24 months alone. To continue providing high-quality services and meeting the growing demand for digital connectivity, it has become essential to realign our pricing structure with economic realities,' Balsingh emphasized. Earlier, DAILY POST reported that MTN had also submitted a 100 percent tariff hike to NCC citing macroeconomic realities. Meanwhile, NCC is yet to approve the proposal by telcos for a tariff hike
