Nigerian athletes have said the postponement of the second AFN Golden League will afford them more time to train and prepare for the championship.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria recently postponed the Golden League — which was initially scheduled to hold June 7 and 8, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City — to June 14 and 15 at the same venue.

“This change of date is due to circumstances beyond the control of the AFN, “ AFN Secretary-General, Rita Moshindi, said in a statement.Sprinter Samuel Ogazi, who won gold in the 400m at the first AFN Golden League held in May in Abuja told The PUNCH that the one-week extension was a big boost for the athletes.“After the first AFN Golden League in Abuja last month, I fell ill and I had to treat myself.

“I will not perform at my best if I participate in the championship with my injury. I’m now at Asaba treating myself and training for the event. “ I was very happy when I heard that the AFN had postponed the date of the event because it will afford me more time to be fit and ready for the meet.” Also, African junior champion Kanyinsola Ajayi added that he and some other athletes welcomed the idea of shifting the Golden League to June 14All rights reserved.
